Drugstore products: Eyeliners

Hi ladies!

I've been going through my make-up drawers and I found some different eyeliners, so I thought I could help some readers of my blog by going through my eyeliners and by telling you the pro's and con's about the ones I have. I'm always searching for good eyeliners, because it's a product I always use when I'm wearing make-up. I'm a big winged eyeliner kind of girl. Winged eyeliner is like my go to eyelook. If you're just starting to wear make-up, it'll be difficult to make a pretty winged out eyeliner, but after all these years, I'm really fast at making the perfect winged eyeliner. Although I still make mistakes, I'm already much faster at making a straight line above my eye.

I'm already on the hunt for the perfect and easy drugstore eyeliner since I started to wear make-up. I've tried all different kinds of eyeliner: liquid liner, gel liner and pencil liner. I've took my drugstore ones and I will talk about them one by one so you can decide which kind of eyeliner you would prefer. Please note that all these products are purchased in Belgium, so they maybe aren't at the drugstore at your country.

These are the drugstore eyeliners that I will be talking about: two liquid liners, gel liner and a pencil liner. I'm always switching between the different kinds of liners: I will use the liquid liner for a few weeks and then use the pencil liner for a few weeks. Currently I'm often using the gel liner now.

The first eyeliner I want to talk about is a pencil liner. This is the Essence Longlasting Eye Pencil in 01 Black Fever. It claims to be a supersoft eye pencil that will give you a precise application and that it will be long-lasting. I do not totally agree with all the promises the brand makes about this pencil. I know it's not a waterproof eyeliner, but it fades out really quickly after you've drawn a line with it on your waterline. It's hard to find a drugstore pencil liner that stays on your waterline for a few hours, but this one smudges really fast.

Since a few weeks I'm trying to use this eyeliner above my eyes, creating a winked eyeliner. This creates a thicker but softer look than if you would use a liquid liner. Like you can see on the picture, you can't really make a fine, precise line with this pencil because it doesn't have a sharp point at the tip. It can be really pretty to do this thicker, softer winged eyeliner, but like I said before, it will not stay in place for a long time. Overall, I wasn't impressed by this product. I know I can't expect much from a cheap drugstore product, but the product itself claims to be long-lasting and precise and in my opinion, it doesn't fulfill its promises. It retails in drugstores for 1,59 euro.

The second liner I want to talk about is a liquid liner. This is the Essence Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. It claims to give you high definition eye contours, to be waterproof and to have a ultra soft tip. This is the first liquid liner I bought. It was one of the cheapest liquid liners that I found, but I just wanted to see what how a liquid liner worked.

In the beginning it was just a big mess to use this one (I'm talking about years ago). Like you can see in the picture, the tip of the liner isn't so thin as other liquid liners. At first the tip narrows, but it at the very end the tip expands a bit again. If you like bold winked eyeliner, this can be a good liner for you, but I found it hard to make a precise line with this liner. Like the product claims, I can't deny that it has a soft tip. About the quality of the product, I'm not impressed either. It's not waterproof at all! When you apply the liner to your skin and when it's dried up, you'll see thin lines that divide the eyeliner and you'll  get to peel off the eyeliner with your fingers. At that time I was satisfied with having this eyeliner, but now I've tested a lot more eyeliners since then, I know how different a good liquid eyeliner can be. Like you can make up already: I'm not really fond of this liquid eyeliner. This is the old edition of the Essence liquid eyeliner, but I've seen that Essence has upgraded the packaging of this product and I've heard that the quality improved as well. So I have to try the new edition then! Anyway, this product retails in drugstores for 2,49 euro.

The third product is another liquid liner. This is the Catrice Cosmetics Waterproof Liquid Liner in 010 Don't Leave Me!. This product claims to give you a precise application and of all the eyeliners in this post, this one really gives me the most precise and pigmented application.

The Catrice Liquid Liner has a very fine tip that can give me a thin line. I've used this eyeliner for the last few months and it always stayed in place for hours, even if I was wearing the eyeliner for 24 hours!   It really fulfills its promises about giving a precise and waterproof line. The only downside liquid eyeliners have in my opinion, is that they have a kind of shine when the product is dried up. I prefer a winked liner that has a matte finish to it. This product retails in drugstores for 3,79 euro.

The last product I want to review is a gel liner of Catrice. This is the Catrice Cosmetics Gel Eyeliner in 010 Black Jack with Jack Black. I apply this with a Catrice double sided brush, but I use the angled brush to apply the gel liner. I think this way of applying an eyeliner takes the longest time for me.

I thought a gel liner would be much more difficult to apply to my eyes, but turned out it was easier! Currently I'm using this liner every day for making a winked liner. This doesn't give me a very thin line, but it's easy to apply. The only downside to this product, is that I have to go over the line a second time to make sure it's an intense black line. The gel liner retails in drugstores for 2,59 euro and the angled brush for 3,99 euro.

Here are some swatches of the products:
1. the Catrice Cosmetics Gel Eyeliner in 010 Black Jack with Jack Black
2. the Essence Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
3. the Essence Longlasting Eye Pencil in 01 Black Fever
4. the Catrice Cosmetics Waterproof Liquid Liner in 010 Don't Leave Me!

In general, the eyeliners of Essence don't have the best quality in comparison to the eyeliner products of Catrice. As you can see on the last picture, the products show a difference in pigmentation. I prefer the Catrice liquid liner for a precise winged eyeliner and the Catrice gel liner for a softer winged eyeliner.
Which eyeliner do you use? And which drugstore brand has the best eyeliner in your opinion?

Awesome comparison, this is definitely helpful. My favorite drugstore eyeliner is the L'Oreal Super Liner. It has a felt tip, which I really like, and it's deep deep black.

  4. Fijne review!
